SLEEPERS OR BLOCKWORK
The simplest beds are made from sleepers, either green oak or treated softwood. A more substantial construction will be made from brick or stone or what is becoming increasingly popular – rendered blockwork. Renders look great in the magazines but as we are in Yorkshire it’s worth bearing in mind that they may not stay looking pristine for ever.
Needless to say, a correctly installed blockwork and rendered bed will last for years but it is not always immediately apparent whether the workmanship is up to the task. Are the footings sufficient? Has drainage been installed? Are the back of the blocks waterproofed? Was a silicon-based render used? If the answer to all these questions is yes then the beds will have been quite expensive to construct. If someone offers you a cheap price then you will know why…
