Stylish but Understated Secluded Garden

The clients of this project are a professional couple whose outline brief was for a stylish but understated garden suitable for entertaining. They also wanted privacy from a neighbouring house and from the adjacent new building development.

Quite a bit of the garden spans the side of the house with slightly more space opening out at the back. The area at the back we saw as being the main area for entertaining, as well as the deck which is raised so that you come straight out from the kitchen onto the deck, the steps then take you down onto the main entertainment space. Here we created a circular patio from Indian sandstone surrounded by stone cobble setts which radiate out from the central circle. We left the edges of the cobbles random and put in beds planted with perennial meadow style planting. We used a scheme of purples, pinks and grasses with the odd splash of warmth in the form of Crocosmia George Davidson to give a little bit of lift. When the planting fills out it'll be a beautiful mass of colours and textures, attracting butterflies and bees, an area reminiscent of prairies right in the heart of the city.

We replaced the old wooden deck with a new, much better looking composite deck in Pebble Grey Ecodek which took up less space, but is still large enough to seat several people. The two outside edges of this we planted with bamboo to provide the deck with some extra privacy. All along the perimeters of the property we put up our favourite horizontally boarded wooden fence and inside the fence we also planted clipped Laurel hedging screens, they're evergreen so give cover all year round.

A new path of Indian sandstone was put in, this takes you from the bottom of the deck round to the new gravel driveway where the main entrance is, and where there is space for parking.

The new fence at the front really smartens up the entrance to the property and the Laurel hedging panels run right the way down the length of the garden to the courtyard area at the back, giving a sense of continuity as well as looking fantastic and providing the privacy the clients were looking for.

In all we think we came up with the perfect stylish private garden our clients were asking for and think they're going to really enjoy using the space both for themselves and for entertaining their friends.
