The scourge of fly-tipping and how to stop it
By John Brennan, 19/04/2021
Fly-tipping is an emotive subject that really gets the blood boiling if you love your garden and the wider countryside.
The beauty of nature should not be spoiled by the selfish actions of a few cowboys who just want to get rid of their waste without going down the proper channels.
And this problem appears to be a growing one. In 2019/20, local authorities in the UK dealt with 976,000 incidents, up from 957,000 in the previous 12 months.
So what is it that people tend to throw away? And why?
What are the most common fly-tipping items?
Data collected from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs shows that just under two thirds of items were household waste. That’s a seven per cent increase on the previous year.
Just over a third of these incidents tend to be from a small van load, followed by the equivalent of a car boot or less.
But no matter how many fines and fixed penalty notices local authorities dish out, there is always going to be an element of such bodies being unable to track down and penalise every single person who is guilty of fly-tipping.
This is why it is important for all of us to recognise the horrible effects of fly-tipping, and do what we can to prevent it.
As well as the obvious visual effect of fly-tipping, there are also health consequences to getting rid of waste unsuitably. It doesn’t just have the potential to damage human beings - it can seriously affect wildlife habitats, plantlife and an abundance of other animals.
What can be done?
It is critically important that you properly dispose of garden rubbish and any other waste properly.
Homeowners can get rid of garden waste for nothing, but there is a cost for tradespeople.
Some tradespeople see fly-tipping as a way of cutting the cost of properly disposing items when they have been working on your garden.
But if you are looking for a reputable organisation, and if you have any respect at all for the countryside and the war against litter and fly-tipping, Yorkshire Gardens are ideally placed for you.
