Ornamental Grass Panicum
By John Brennan, 19/12/2018
Now is the time of year when grasses start to come into their own. One of our favourites is Panicum.
What is it? Right now, this grass provides a wash of winey, reddish-purple flowerheads against which to show off late-summer flowers. It changes through the seasons though with fresh, bright green leaves in early summer and pink inflorescences from midsummer. Autumn is the glory time. In winter it fades to straw-coloured fluff.
Panicum Heavy Metal has blue green leaves and is a more upright variety.
They grow to around 1.2m high and will need to be cut back late winter to allow the new spring growth to come through....
We have them in our Tranquil Terraced Garden, combined with perennials, alliums and camassias... and they look great.
